Eating out in Rome
Roman dishes and where to eat.
Roman dishes to try
The "big four" Roman pastas are carbonara, cacio e pepe, amatriciana and gricia. Also try supplì (fried rice balls), pizza al taglio (by the slice), carciofi alla giudia (fried artichokes in season) and saltimbocca. Local wine from Lazio is sold by the quarter-litre jug (quartino) at modest prices.
Choosing good gelato
Look for gelaterias where the gelato is stored in covered metal tubs rather than piled high in bright colours. Natural flavours (pistachio that is greyish-green, banana that is beige) are a good sign. A small cone costs about €2.50–4.
