Local etiquette in Rome

Meals, coffee and manners.

Greetings and manners

Say "buongiorno" when entering a shop or café and "grazie" and "arrivederci" on leaving. A few Italian words go a long way, even if the staff speak English. Italians often speak with their hands and at a loud volume, which is friendly rather than angry.

How to order coffee

Italians drink cappuccino and milky coffee in the morning, and usually switch to espresso (called simply "un caffè") after lunch. Drink it standing at the bar, where it costs about €1–1.50. Ordering a cappuccino after a big meal is unusual, but no one will refuse you.
