Rules & practicalities in Edinburgh

Entry, plugs, drinking and emergencies.

Entry rules and the ETA

Many visitors, including those from the US, Canada, Australia and most of Europe, now need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before they travel; Irish citizens are exempt. Apply only through the official GOV.UK website or app, because copycat sites charge extra. Check your own requirements before you go. Source: UK Government (GOV.UK), checked 2026-10-10

Plugs and voltage

The UK uses Type G three-pin sockets at 230 V. Visitors from North America need a plug adapter and should check that their devices accept 230 V; most phone and laptop chargers do.

Emergency and health numbers

Dial 999 or 112 for police, fire, ambulance or the coastguard. Call 101 for non-emergency police matters and 111 for urgent medical advice (NHS 24). Pharmacies can advise on minor ailments, and visitors should carry travel insurance because overseas visitors may be charged for some NHS care.
