Calton Hill

A small hill with monuments, the "Athens of the North", and the best sunset view of the city.

A five-minute walk from Princes Street brings you to Calton Hill, crowned by an unfinished replica of the Parthenon (the National Monument), the Nelson Monument and the old City Observatory. The view takes in the Castle, Arthur's Seat, Leith and the Firth of Forth.

It is one of the best places in the city for sunset and a free alternative to paying for a viewpoint. The Nelson Monument has a small fee if you want to climb to the top.
