Scams to avoid in Paris
Know them, ignore them.
The petition or clipboard
Someone, often claiming to be deaf, asks you to sign a petition for a charity, then demands a donation. While you are distracted, an accomplice may pick your pocket. Keep walking and say 'Non, merci'.
The friendship bracelet
Mostly around Sacré-Cœur: a man ties a string bracelet on your wrist before you can react, then demands money. Keep your hands in your pockets and walk past firmly.
The 'found' gold ring
Someone 'finds' a gold ring at your feet and offers it to you, then asks for money. The ring is worthless brass. Ignore it and walk on.
The shell game
Groups playing 'find the ball under the cup' near the Eiffel Tower and on bridges are all part of the same team. The 'winners' are accomplices, and pickpockets work the crowd watching.
