Louvre Museum Musée du Louvre
The world's most visited museum, from the Mona Lisa to ancient Egypt.
A royal palace turned museum, the Louvre holds around 35,000 works on display across three wings: Denon, Sully and Richelieu. Most visitors head straight to the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo and the Winged Victory of Samothrace, all in or near the Denon wing.
Do not try to see everything. Pick two or three areas, such as Italian painting, Egyptian antiquities or Napoleon III's apartments, and enjoy them properly.
Booking advice
A timed-entry ticket is required, even for free admission. Book online, ideally for the first slot of the day or a late evening.
Insider tips
- The Porte des Lions and Carrousel entrances often have shorter queues than the main pyramid entrance.
- Visit the Mona Lisa first thing or in the last hour; mid-morning the room is packed.
- Napoleon III's apartments in the Richelieu wing are breathtaking and usually quiet.
