Gold Souk & Spice Souk سوق الذهب
Lanes of gold jewellery shops and sacks of spices, frankincense and dried fruit.
From the Deira abra landing, the Spice Souk is a few steps away: open sacks of saffron, cardamom, dried lemons, frankincense and dates line the alleys. A short walk further, the Gold Souk glitters with hundreds of jewellery shops under a wooden roof.
Gold is sold by weight at the day's price plus a charge for the workmanship, and that charge is where bargaining happens. Even if you are not buying, the windows are a sight in themselves.
Booking advice
No booking needed. Visit in the late afternoon when shops reopen and the alleys are livelier.
Insider tips
- Ask for the gold price per gram and the making charge separately, then negotiate the making charge.
- Spice sellers will quote high prices for "saffron" to tourists; buy small amounts and compare a few stalls.
- The Perfume Souk on Sikkat Al Khail Road is nearby for oud and attars.
