Scams to avoid in Barcelona
Pickpockets and common tricks.
Pickpockets are the main risk
Barcelona has some of Europe's most active pickpockets, especially on La Rambla, around the Boqueria, in the metro, on the Sagrada Família approach and on the beach. Carry phones and wallets in front or zipped pockets, keep bags closed in front of you, and never leave anything on a café table or a beach towel.
Distraction tricks
Common tricks include someone spilling something on you, asking for help with a map, a "found ring" or a petition to sign while another person takes your bag. Be polite but firm, and walk away. Thieves often work in teams on metro platforms and escalators.
Tourist-trap restaurants
Restaurants with photo menus, touts at the door or prices not listed, especially on La Rambla and near the cathedral, are often overpriced. Walk a street or two away and look for a short menu and local customers. Always check prices for seafood sold by weight before ordering.
If something goes wrong
Call 112 for any emergency. To report a theft, go to a police station and ask for a copy of the report for your insurer, or use the online form for minor thefts. Keep a photo of your passport, and ask your bank to freeze cards quickly if they are stolen. Source: European Commission (112 emergency number), checked 2026-10-11
