The Barri Gòtic is the old city, built on the Roman town of Barcino. Its lanes open onto small squares such as Plaça Sant Felip Neri and Plaça del Rei, and you can still see Roman walls and four columns of the Temple of Augustus hidden in a courtyard.
Much of the "Gothic" look is partly 19th and 20th century restoration, but the atmosphere is real. It is best explored on foot without a fixed plan, with a coffee stop in a quiet square.

Insider tips
- Look for the hidden Roman columns at Carrer del Paradís 10, usually viewable during opening hours.
- Plaça Sant Felip Neri is quiet and photogenic; keep your voice down, as it has a school.
- Streets get dark and empty late at night; stay on the lit routes and watch your bag.
